For many anglers, the site of the frozen waters represent a very special time of year, some consider it to be the best time of year.
Most anglers through trial and error have all the places of their favorite lakes in the back of their minds and know exactly where to go to find the fish.
If you're a diehard ice fishermen you probably have the majority of items you’ll need to keep yourself warm in the harshest of weathers.
One of ice fishing’s greatest inventions was the birth of the shanty.
Shanties are nothing more than a small enclosed cubicle that help keep the elements out and the warmth in.
Shanties come in various sizes and weights. One factor to keep in mind for your purchase of a nice shanty is to determine the amount of anglers you plan on fishing with.
Typically a shanty that seats four is best, most likely you plan on fishing with one other person, a four seat’r will allow you a nice comfort zone and plenty of room for all the extras you’d like to bring.
Most Shanties come with a bottom specifically made for sliding across the ice with little or no effort. Be sure your purchase does.
Purchasing a Shanty with a clear top will not only allow daylight and daylight warmth in but will also give you an opportunity to keep an eye on weather changes as they occur.
If a clear top is not your style be sure to have windows to keep an eye on the weather.
If you feel the need for a heater your best bet may be the purchase of a propane type lantern. A propane type lantern will not only give you an excessive amount of light but will generate enough heat to keep you warm in such a small enclosed area.
If you do purchase a propane lantern be sure you acquire a two foot stand. You want the lantern up high enough to utilize the light but not too high to burn a hole through the top of your shanty.
Using a clear top shanty the light factor may not be an issue, but I would still recommend using a propane type heater. I recommend propane tools due to the fact so many accidents have occurred using gas or kerosene heaters and lamps.
A pair of good boots is the most essential item you’ll need to keep yourself warm throughout the day. Once your feet get cold, your day shot.
Spending extra on a pair of boots will make your day more enjoyable.
As for jackets, shirts and pants, thermal everything will help keep you warm even in the coldest weather.
Several layers of clothing create an insulation barrier where the outside cold and your body heat meet somewhere in the middle of the clothing thus keeping you warm.
Don’t forget a small first aid kit filled with the basics, just in case!
