Modern Fables Apr.'09

By Rich Bell
Once upon a time there was a little grilled cheese sandwich that came suddenly into conscious existence as the result of an order at a lunchroom grill (and a weird miracle). He felt satisfied with being a grilled cheese sandwich and life seemed OK. He was all toasty brown and his cheese was lightly melted.
As he was taken from the grill he noticed a large woman staring intently at him. He heard the cook tell her that ‘her’ sandwich was ready. Was he the sandwich being spoken of? He assumed so and hoped she would be nice to him.
Shortly thereafter he found himself plopped onto a Styrofoam plate. He sat there contentedly and pondered the meaning of his life, however brief, and he had a little pickle as a friend
A few minutes later some extremely hot french fries joined him on his plate. They jostled into him and he was burned a bit as they were all handed over to the lady who took him away from the only home he had ever known. She brought him to a register where some money was exchanged, then to the cool air of the cafeteria. He looked around with awe and wonder at this new and dazzling world. He saw other sandwiches that appeared to be in different stages of being ‘all there’ and heard their strange shouts.
She picked him up and he came closer and closer to her mouth, which was opening wider as he approached. Then it dawned on him what was happening.
“Don’t do this!” he shouted, “Don’t you know who I am? I am someone very important in the universe, I’m sure, and I have my rights, so you put me down this instant!”  He called out to the fries but they were frozen with terror. He could see no escape. How unfair it all seemed. Who knows, he might have become a doctor or a professional musician. He screamed again,  “I am Cheese Sandwich and I have a right to exist.” But all she heard was the chatter of the lunchroom.
He saw his brief little life flash before his eyes, and then she took a bite out of him. It did not hurt like he expected it to. In fact, he felt nothing at all. He seemed to be as intact as when he left the grill. The fries went bravely to their fate, not a whimper from any of them. When the lady came to her last bite of him, he found himself floating in space without a body and saw a bright light approaching him. He watched it peacefully.
The light was the light over the grill back in the cooking area. He had come back as another grilled cheese sandwich!
Fate can be a cruel joker.
