FOR YOUR EARS ONLY June '09

By Da Rock Critics
THE SOUL VITAMINS are self described as “a dirty white boy band from the suburbs with roots in blues, funk, rock, progressive and metal” AND we totally agree!  Front man Jason Nelson plays a nasty lead guitar and his soulful vocals are very much like those of some of the great blues and rock masters.  Jamming side-by-side with Jason on vocals and guitar was Dave McCafferty, who wailed on his axe all night long producing the outrageous sounds that kept us charmed till the wee hours.  To keep the rhythm going, bass guitarist Johnny Orr did a fantastic job keeping up with the in-your-face antics of Jason and Dave.  Johnny’s back up vocals were also a very mentionable contribution.  Rounding out this powerhouse band was drummer Patrick Newell.  Patrick’s roots are in heavy metal and his aggressive style fits the band perfectly.  The Soul Vitamins put on a great show and like the crowd who came to see them, we had a blast partying with them.  They covered everyone from Hendrix to Floyd and even threw in a couple of gut wrenching original blues tunes.  The highlight of the night was their awesome tribute to one of our favorite blues men, Buddy Guy.  Great job guys and hope to see you again soon.    ROCK ON!!!

The first thing we noticed about STRINGTOWN was that lead guitarist Dave Dalton was playing an acoustical guitar (which seemed odd to us for a rock band).  However, the sound provided by Dave and his guitar was unique and quite good.  Dave sang lead vocals on more than a few tunes all the while showing the crowd what a seasoned pro he was on guitar.  Not to be out done, the other half of lead vocals was sung by the lovely Sarah Rankin who amazed everyone with her perfect covers of Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow and Lindsey Buckingham, all the while shredding up the keyboard.  Dave and Sarah make a great duo due to the fact that they were able to trade off lead and back up vocals smoothly.  At the beginning of the third set, bass player Jon Muse grabbed the mic and took all of us back to the movie Easy Rider with a great rendition of “The Weight” originally performed by “The Band”.  Jon is one of the finest bass players in the area and has played with too many bands to list.  Drummer Jason Montgomery is the newest member of Stringtown and like his fellow band mates, is a seasoned pro demonstrated by playing flawlessly all night.  Stringtown is a very diverse, highly entertaining group with extensive onstage experience.  We had a good time and you will too!      ROCK ON!!!
